Meat and Poultry Inspection

What We Do

Meat and Poultry Inspection Division inspects meat processing and distribution facilities to ensure that West Virginia consumers receive only safe, wholesome and unadulterated products. Inspectors check live animals for signs of disease, and recheck the carcass after slaughter for any other signs of disease. Facilities must be constructed to meet sanitary processing and storage standards, and sanitary conditions must be maintained. Inspectors also enforce humane slaughter rules and are on hand daily at the commercial plants that produce meat products for retail sale.

What's Going On

MPID has been working with a new meat processing facility in Teays Valley that will give buyers a custom butcher shop specializing in locally raised meat products. Call’s Market is located at 3550 Teay’s Valley Road. The new processing facility is licensed for both custom and commercial processing, meaning people can have their own livestock processed there, or they can buy packaged retail products over the counter.

Whether it's beef, pork, or poultry, the MPID is working with processing facilities across the state to make sure West Virginians can find a place to have their meat butchered or just pick up a fresh cut from a licensed business.
